Glossary: Independent Review Mechanism

This is a review process set up for prospective adopters and, since 1 April 2009, foster carers, where a Qualifying Determination has been made by the adoption/fostering agency which carried out their assessment that they are not suitable. In relation to foster carers it is also available where their approval is changed or terminated.

The review process will also be available where a qualifying determination is made, in relation to post-30 December 2005 Adoption Orders, where a decision is made not to proceed with an application for disclosure of protected information or to disclose information against the express wishes of the person the information is about or not to disclose information about a person to the applicant where that person has expressed the view that the information should be disclosed.
